Anthurium Care Tips & Tricks

Anthurium Care Tips & Tricks

1. Light

  • Prefers bright, indirect light.
  • Avoid harsh direct sun (burns leaves).
  • Too little light = fewer blooms and slower growth.

Trick: Place near an east- or north-facing window, or use a sheer curtain to soften sun.

2. Watering

Water when top 1–2 inches of soil are dry.

  • Soil should stay lightly moist, not soggy.
  • Use room-temperature water and ensure pot has drainage holes.

Trick: Stick your finger into the soil. If it feels dry 1 inch down, it's time to water.

3. Humidity

  • Loves high humidity (60% or more).
  • Boost humidity with:
    • A humidifier
    • A pebble tray
    • Grouping plants together

Trick: Place in the bathroom (with good light) for a natural humidity boost.

4. Soil

  • Needs loose, airy, well-draining soil.
  • Best mix: orchid bark + perlite + peat moss or coco coir.

Trick: Avoid regular garden soil—it retains too much moisture and may cause root rot.

5. Temperature

  • Ideal range: 65–80°F (18–27°C).
  • Avoid cold drafts, AC vents, or heaters.
  • Don't expose to temps below 55°F (13°C).

6. Fertilizer

  • Feed during the growing season (spring to early fall) with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer (e.g., 20-20-20 or a bloom booster).
  • Every 6–8 weeks is enough.

Trick: Too much fertilizer can burn roots. Less is more!

7. Pruning & Cleaning

  • Wipe leaves gently to remove dust and allow better photosynthesis.
  • Prune yellow or dead leaves and spent flowers to redirect energy.

8. Pest Control

  • Watch for: aphids, mealybugs, spider mites, and scale.
  • Treat early with neem oil, insecticidal soap, or by rinsing the plant.

Trick: Check leaf undersides regularly—it’s where pests like to hide.

9. Repotting

  • Repot every 1–2 years, or when roots grow out of the pot.
  • Choose a pot only 1–2 inches larger in diameter.
